And off to India...
India! I had always wanted to go there but when I did finally visit, a few years ago, I was completely unprepared for the assault on my senses. I was absolutely terrified for the first week: so many people! So much happening! A total disregard for personal space! It was overwhelming. I thought I knew what to expect as I’d travelled in Southeast Asia before, but India really is an entirely different kettle of fish. And I had been a lot younger/less fazed on my previous travels. However, after the initial shock wore off, India began to fascinate me… it’s all such a cliche; the colours, the smells, and so on and so forth, but it’s all TRUE. I was fortunate enough to visit the north (the Golden Triangle) and the south (Kerala), which were very different to each other. To be honest, I preferred the south; I loved the food and the scenery, and I found it far more relaxed. I hadn’t realised how MASSIVE India is – each apex of the Golden Triangle (Agra, Jaipur, Delhi) is a good five-hour drive apart, and when you look at this on a map (thank you, Lonely Planet website!) it’s teeny-tiny compared to the rest of the country. Next time, I would love to go east and visit Kolkata and Darjeeling.
