Our latest book club venture was 'The Heart's Invisible Furies' by the Irish author John Boyne. I hadn't read any of the author's work previously, but had heard him interviewed on the radio and really liked his demeanour; he was thoughtful and sincere, self-deprecating and funny, and I was looking forward to reading this particular book. It's a highly personal offering from the author, focusing on Ireland's treatment of the gay community from the 1940s to the present day, through the experiences of the main character Cyril and his mother Catherine who was forced to give him up for adoption after falling pregnant at the age of 16.

After a protracted bout of unilateral sinusitis (probably not a medical term; I'm sure I just made that up) involving several days of fairly constant pain in the left side of my face, my cold finally 'broke' a couple of days ago, and although things are looking up now I've been feeling very sorry for myself the last week or two. However, despite my one-sided cold and accompanying self-pity, I had a lovely, lovely Christmas, and it's a new year, so onwards and upwards...

About my blog
Really, it contains a little bit of everything, from a celebration of science and the English language to the joys of travel and the Shipping Forecast. The title ('Meanderings') is a fairly accurate description of its content: I write about different things as the mood takes me, but hopefully there's something in here for everyone... Categories
