'Spill Simmer Falter Wither' by Sara Baume actually broke me. I was aware of a growing tension within as I navigated my way through the book, which was gradually replaced by a sense of alarm and a genuine fear that things were getting a little too dark for my liking, before I started to feel unbearably sad and angry and (eventually) resigned myself to the central character's fate. The last few pages reduced me to a howling mess, and I didn't stop crying for a good 30 minutes after I finished reading. My emotional involvement was surprisingly intense and I think it may be the most simultaneously powerful and gentle stories I've ever come across (in this regard it reminded me a little of 'Strange Weather in Tokyo').

It's November, the clocks have gone back, and it's getting dark at 4:30 in the afternoon, but we've had a lovely summer and a cheery, sunshine-filled October so I don't mind at all. It's remarkable how a good dose of decent weather can increase resilience to our Atlantic winter of unrelenting wind and rain and grey; I'm actually (almost) enjoying the transition in the seasons, noticing how beautiful the bare, black branches of the trees are against the silver sky and the tinges of pink in the pale blue clouds at sunset. I'm also very lucky to have a sort-of-view of the sea and the Clare hills from my 'office' (I use the word loosely; this room is a total free-for-all and you could find anything in here) window once the leaves have made their way down from the trees, which fills me with happy - my view changes mood all through the day and looking out the window for only a few minutes perks me up no end and recharges my batteries...
In addition to all this communing with nature, I've been catching up on my reading as follows: |
About my blog
Really, it contains a little bit of everything, from a celebration of science and the English language to the joys of travel and the Shipping Forecast. The title ('Meanderings') is a fairly accurate description of its content: I write about different things as the mood takes me, but hopefully there's something in here for everyone... Categories
