The Amazing Story of the Man who Cycled from India to Europe for Love, & how May's been so far...24/5/2018 It's May! And it's like we're suddenly in a completely different country... winter went on for at least six months this time around but now, seemingly all of a shot, the evenings are nice and long, there's green everywhere, and the donning of a million layers of clothing just to go outside for five minutes is no longer mandatory. May has been quite lovely for the most part, and it feels almost like we're emerging from a long hibernation, blinking and dazzled by all the bright light and non-freezing ambient temperatures. People genuinely don't know themselves. Here are some photos of flowers and green that I took yesterday, as I wandered around in a daze wondering what the strange burning ball in the sky was: In addition to all of this positive, life-affirming change, May has also had its fair share of busyness and has absolutely flown past - this is probably why the explosion in vegetation around me has come as such a surprise (I could swear that all this nature stuff happened overnight but it's more likely that I just wasn't paying attention). The airwaves are full (FULL!) of the referendum on the 8th Amendment and there is definitely a tension in the air: this referendum is HUGE; I won't go into it too much here as it's such a sensitive, charged issue and my own personal take on it isn't any more valid than anyone else's, but it's kind of like Ireland's Brexit or the US Donald Trump election... I don't know how it's all going to pan out (the vote takes place tomorrow) but it has certainly revealed a massive - albeit, restrained - irreconcilable divide within the country, almost akin to a civil war. I think it will change things forever, irrespective of the outcome, and it makes me sad that we still can't properly respect or consider opinions that are contradictory to our own. It's weighing heavy on the nation, I feel... there's a funny atmosphere and everyone just looks kind of worn out with it all at this stage. We shall see tomorrow how it goes, I guess...

About my blog
Really, it contains a little bit of everything, from a celebration of science and the English language to the joys of travel and the Shipping Forecast. The title ('Meanderings') is a fairly accurate description of its content: I write about different things as the mood takes me, but hopefully there's something in here for everyone... Categories
