A few years ago I inadvertently started collecting nicely-illustrated books from other countries, which happened to be in the native language of that particular country, and were therefore (for the most part) entirely unintelligible to me. As it happens, most of them were books for children but this really isn't as strange as it might sound... let me explain!

I spent last weekend in London with Anthony, which was really quite lovely. To be honest, I don't often take the time to be a tourist in the city and just wander around. It is such a beautiful and interesting place and wonderful to visit, even though I couldn't live there - it's far too much of an urban environment for me (I think I may have mentioned my preference for trees and cows and being in the middle of nowhere, oh, about a million times before). This is my issue: with cities in general (and this is only my opinion; I don't want to offend any city dwellers), there's often so much sheer humanity that it can be overwhelming. I genuinely think that living in a city can be very hard and lonely for a lot of people, as society is tougher, and its inhabitants become somewhat desensitized to the suffering of those around them.
I've just had a quick read through of where I was at for my last blog entry about my work (see here!), which was about two months after I started. It's amazing how much has happened in the intervening period and I don't quite know where to start...let's see where it goes!
It's been a poor show from me (in terms of blogging, at least) the last couple of months. And it's not that I don't have the will to post (really, I do!), but I just haven't had the time. This year has been hectic, and June and July were just ridiculously busy (in a good way). I've had no time to do any housekeeping-type stuff, and although I've tried writing in the mornings/evenings before/after work, I don't get a lot of enjoyment from it and it almost feels like a chore. I need time to think and rattle about and I'm definitely not at my most creative or lyrical when I'm stressed about being late for work or my eyes are in bits from staring at a computer all day. However! All my different trips and holidays and outings (see, all nice things...I am terrible to be complaining; I really am very lucky and so grateful) have come to an end and this is the first weekend since January or February where I have NOTHING planned. It feels strange to be sitting in front of the computer at 10am in my Sonic the Hedgehog house trousers (midway between acceptable outdoor wear and sleeping attire) but it's good to catch my breath!

About my blog
Really, it contains a little bit of everything, from a celebration of science and the English language to the joys of travel and the Shipping Forecast. The title ('Meanderings') is a fairly accurate description of its content: I write about different things as the mood takes me, but hopefully there's something in here for everyone... Categories
