I visited Portugal for the first time last week, and it was wonderful! It's a while since I've travelled in sunny continental Europe and I'd forgotten how lovely it all is. May is an especially nice time of year to travel; temperatures are still fairly manageable, the tourist scene is definitely less crowded, and it's far cheaper than during the high-peak months of June, July and August. So, off we went to Faro in the Algarve, and I wasn't quite sure what to expect; I'm not a big fan of sitting beside the pool all day (while I like to know the sun is there I prefer to be in the shade, and I'm doubly rubbish at sunbathing because I get bored/cranky very quickly - I find it impossible to stay still on holidays) but Faro is really pretty and Portuguese and perfect for doing a bit of exploring. It's just the right amount of touristy; easy to navigate but it still feels like it belongs to the locals. It's the hub of the Algarve, with excellent transport links, and separates the hugely popular, party-party resorts in the central western section of the coastline from the less developed (in a tourism sense) towns to the east, which lead to the Spanish border.

Greetings from a sunny Galway! I had never thought about the 'aspect' of a house before but now, as I spend so much time working from and pottering about at home, I have become hyper-aware of how the light moves throughout our house over the course of the day. We are very lucky and get plenty of sunlight; the front of our house faces northeast while the back faces southwest AND we have a window facing south upstairs, so we get lots of lovely sunshine for most of the day. The light makes such a difference to my mood and I love being at home during the day. Anyways, I digress! I hadn't intended to write about Eimear McBride's second outing, which I mentioned briefly in a previous post about my book club (see here), but it's one of the most thought-provoking books I've read in a long time and I needed to synthesize my feelings and opinion on it as I still don't quite know what to make of it all...

About my blog
Really, it contains a little bit of everything, from a celebration of science and the English language to the joys of travel and the Shipping Forecast. The title ('Meanderings') is a fairly accurate description of its content: I write about different things as the mood takes me, but hopefully there's something in here for everyone... Categories
