Well, hello there! It's now August and I have to say, the weather so far this summer has been surprisingly lovely. I always wrote off Irish summers when describing them to people unfamiliar with our climate here (for example: 'well, the rain might be a bit warmer/less horizontal') but we've had several months of fairly decent weather and I almost take it for granted now. Of course, there are still the weekly or bi-weekly deluges and crazy gales but they don't seem to last for as long as usual, and the temperature of the air outside is guaranteed (for the most part) to be almost benign these days. However! Although this nice weather is definitely welcome and I'm not COMPLAINING or anything, I'm secretly convinced that Ireland is built for rain and stormy skies... away from the wonderful vivid greens and colourful wildflowers of the fields and hedgerows, the beautiful Irish landscape can look washed out in the sunshine (all the rocks and seaweed and mountains and wild beaches just do not work under a bright blue sky and harsh light) and the heat feels kind of oppressive, like we don't know what to do with it. Air conditioning is unheard of here, and I've realized that as a nation we don't have any semblance of a culture that embraces good weather. I've come around to thinking that once the initial euphoria of seeing the sun wears off there's a little part of us inside that misses the miserable old rain, although no-one would ever admit it...

About my blog
Really, it contains a little bit of everything, from a celebration of science and the English language to the joys of travel and the Shipping Forecast. The title ('Meanderings') is a fairly accurate description of its content: I write about different things as the mood takes me, but hopefully there's something in here for everyone... Categories
